The main focus of my digital artwork is on digital
landscapes and its outskirts.
In the middle of the 90's I made my first steps into digital
arts with the 3D application Bryce, but never delved into
it seriously. Then in late 2003 when I finally had a fast
new computer, I discovered Terragen for me.
For those who are unfamiliar with Terragen: It is a 3D landscape
creator and renderer supposed to make photorealistic landscape
images. Unlike many other 3D programmes it doesn't render
objects, but just one heightfield / terrain (versions before
Terragen 2). You can apply surface layers and textures to
it, manipulate the atmosphere/lighting and only one layer
of clouds and one water plane. This is very few and very restricted.
But to me this is the challenge to be creative.
I like doing realistic looking renders, mainly for relaxation
or to express a certain mood. Like the painters of romanticism
I try to express some of my emotions by creating a lansdcape.

On the other hand I often try (existing or new) techniques.
I try to push or even break the boundarys of the software.
For this purpose I use extreme settings in Terragen, import
unusual terrains and/or do some postwork with Photoshop.
Regarding the terrains I experimented a lot with using fractals
(flames created with Apophysis), and I use external terrain
editors like World Machine or TerraBrush or even Photoshop.
Most of my images are not postworked at all,
but sometimes I do some layering work, combining two, three
or more renders of one scene and sometimes with photographic
elements. This is something I will focus more in the future.
I like to use (or misuse) Terragen in a way to create images
that look more like abstract paintings than a traditional
landscape.
Apart from being present at a number of online galleries
and communities I run an own website to show my complete work
and share my ideas and knowledge with all who are interested.
